I invited expressions of interest * in this unique ‘Off the Loom’ textile handwoven by textile artist and printmaker Tadek Beutlich MBE. It was bought by my mother, textile artist Fay Hankins who was Tadek’s studio manager and assistant during his years at Gospels in Ditchling. Fay paid £500 for it at the Beutlich exhibition, for which I curated the textiles in Ditchling in 2017, but Tadek’s widow Ellen immediately asked me to reimburse Fay when she heard this and then gifted it to her.
It was chosen by my mother after Ellen told me that this was the one piece that Tadek always had hanging in his studio, wherever he moved. Fay remained lifelong friends with Tadek and Ellen from the time they met in 1967. Sadly this year (2023) both my mother Fay and Ellen passed away within a few months of each other. I am now selling this piece on behalf of my mother’s estate.

I was delighted to have illustrated the first charity Christmas card for CPRE Sussex (Campaign for Protection of Rural England) in 2019, which depicts the view from the clifftop at Birling Gap looking west across the beach. It has been reprinted for 2020 with two other artist's cards also available, all beautiful packed in a printed fully recyclable cardboard case. So I do hope that it will raise much needed funds for CPRE Sussex and help to spread the word about them. The original painting is for sale You can order yours here

Expect to see 4 impressive Freewarp Tapestry pieces by Tadek Beutlich and some small teaching samples and textiles will also be available. All are for sale.
As well as the considerable talent that BTG will be sharing with you, you will also see tapestry works by the internationally renowned artist William Jefferies.

Tadek Beutlich (1922 – 2011) is known as a weaver of textile constructions and tapestries and as a printmaker. This exhibition will include his textile work, both wall hangings and constructions and his original hand made prints. Beutlich is recognised for his visionary work in tapestry weaving, extraordinary textiles that pushed the boundaries of his medium with 'free warp’ tapestries woven off the loom and later 'fibre art' using esparto grass and mixed media. Beutlich was also a master at printmaking creating large relief prints that often referenced his textile designs. He made his prints by hand using, as he described, odd bits of wood and lino and then printing them with his own hand made box filled with stones, which worked as a roller and press.
His ground breaking work earned him world recognition with pieces in collections in the UK in the V&A Museum, British Museum, the Government Art Collection and in collections in other countries including North America, Australia, Poland, Sweden. His book ‘The Technique of Woven Tapestry' (1967) is still used as a textbook in textile courses worldwide.
The exhibition, curated by Emma Mason Prints in partnership with Liz Hankins (manager of the Beutlich collection and archive), will display his printmaking, weaving and fibre-art side by side in the beautiful setting of The Jointure Studios in Ditching. Beutlich lived and worked in Ditchling between 1967 and 1974.This exhibition is a rare opportunity to see and buy work from the studio of the late Tadek Beutlich. All work will be for sale.

The response to our exhibition of Tadek Beutlich's works from his studio, currently showing at Ditchling has been so wonderful! Thank you to all of you who have travelled such long distances to see Tadek's work- coming from as far away as Wales and the Lake District as well as many visitors form London.
We are open daily 11-5pm until Sunday 12 March (closing at 4pm Sunday) but we also have a late night opening on Thursday evening 9 March for anyone who has not been able to visit during the day.
