Tadek Beutlich
Fay Hankins was assistant to Tadek Beutlich at Gospels studio (formerly the studio of Ethel Mairet) in Ditchling and Tadek taught Fay how to weave using the unusual techniques he became famous for. After Tadek's death in 2011, Ellen Beutlich asked Liz Hankins, Fay's daughter to catalogue and sell Tadek's archive, textiles and prints which Liz did for 5 years. Liz curated a successful exhibition in Ditchling in March 2017 uniquely of Tadek's textiles from his studio. With Emma Mason Gallery curating Tadek's prints, the exhibition brought Tadek's textiles and prints together in a highly successful show. Liz arranged to bequeath 5 textiles and 5 prints to the V&A and Ditchling Museum agreed to exhibit Tadek's textiles and prints from Sept 206 to April 2017 to coincide with the March 2017 exhibition.
Liz says: I hope to have made Tadek's work more easily available to textile students and artists and his many fans. Ditchling Museum of Art & Craft now has one textile piece by Tadek Beutlich from the Beutlich Estate called Shoots 2 which you can request to view if it is not on display. Ditchling Museum also hold several other textiles by Tadek Beutlich which my mother Fay and I arranged to be donated to them, which you can request to view. Also of interest may be Ethel Mairet's personal annotated copy of her Book of Vegetable Dyes, which I arranged to be generously donated to the Museum by Ellen Beutlich. The V&A have been given 5 more prints for their Beutlich collection and 4 textiles which include Pollination (tapestry), Pollination fibre art, Fungi 1X wall hanging and a selection of smaller samples. You can request to see these at the V&A by contacting the Clothworkers Centre.V&A Clothworkers Centre.
